Did you practice fire safety this month? October was Fire Prevention Month, and October 9th kicked off Fire Prevention Week in remembrance of The Great Chicago Fire. This tragic Fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued on doing most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

Fire Prevention Month provides a great reminder to educate your employees about fire safety and fire prevention.  It’s the perfect time to share general safety tips, fire escape plans, and facts about fire. Here are a few of our tips to help you get started.

  • Test your smoke detectors monthly, if the alarm doesn’t sound change the battery immediately.
  • When crafting your fire escape plan, find at least 2 different ways out of your home.
  • Utilize flame retardant materials whenever possible, especially in sleepwear.
  • Keep a first aid kit in your office and in your car at all times in case of emergency.
  • Consider installing Auto Shut-Off Safety Outlets throughout your house to prevent fires caused by plug-in appliances and other electrical devices.
