How Following Road Laws Can Keep You Safe

A lot of the time, it’s so easy to speed when no police officers are around and there aren’t a lot of people on the road. Sometimes it’s simply easier to not use your blinker or cut in front of someone who’s going to slow. However, even in the most frustrating situations, it’s important to follow the laws, as they are there for a reason. In many cases, these rules can help keep people safe on the road, including those working on the roads. Other rules – such as those that require these workers to wear safety vests or safety rain gear – are also in place to keep drivers and workers safe.

Speed Limits

For example, speed limits aren’t just arbitrary numbers put in place by random people. Instead, speed limits are created using a variety of factors, one of which being the aim to reduce the differences of speeds of those on the road. For example, the reason the speed limit is higher on highways is because most of the cars are traveling at the same speed. When driving through town, people experience stoplights, cars pulling out of shopping centers, people making slow right turns, and more, meaning the lowest speed and the highest speed are very far apart. Also, certain roads are actually designed for higher speed limits. Another factor is whether there is the possibility of side or head-on crashes.

Defensive Driving

Being a safe, defensive driver can drastically reduce your chances of being involved in an accident. There will always be some hothead big-shot on the road driving to fast and weaving in and out of traffic. These people are impossible to avoid, and they are often the cause of accidents. Overestimating a yellow light, cutting someone off to closely, or taking a turn to quickly often leads to injuries or accidents, so simply keeping a safe distance from these bad drivers is a good tip.

Work Zones

One very important traffic rule concerns work zones. More than a hundred construction workers die every year working near the highway, with more than 20,000 sustaining injuries. Speeding through work zones often brings about a doubled speeding fine. Safety for these workers is vastly important, as not only is construction one of the most dangerous jobs out there, but working near a road comes with increased danger. In order to keep these workers as visible as possible, highly reflective safety vests are a necessity.

Safety Vests And Rain Gear

Since simply being visible is one of the most important things for construction workers on the road, these safety vests play a huge part in their safety. They usually come in very bright colors – neon orange and neon green – and are made to catch the reflection of car lights. Things can get even worse when bad weather sets in. Safety rain gear is invaluable in these instances. They are as bright and reflective as the safety vests but are suitable to help protect construction workers from foul weather.

Keeping construction workers safe is the responsibility of all the drivers on the road, so even if you feel the urge to speed by, don’t put someone’s loved ones at risk. Make sure to always keep your eyes open around construction zones, particularly when the weather is bad. And if you’re working at a construction zone near the highway, make sure you have your safety vests or your safety rain gear on so you can remain as visible as possible. Safety clothing saves many lives.
